Special Sessions

Special sessions are very small and specialized events to be held during the conference as a set of oral and poster presentations that are highly specialized in some particular theme or consisting of the works of some particular international project. The goal of special sessions (minimum 4 papers; maximum 9) is to provide a focused discussion on innovative topics. All accepted papers will be published in a special section of the conference proceedings book, under an ISBN reference, and on digital support. All papers presented at the conference venue will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. SCITEPRESS is a member of CrossRef and every paper is given a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). The proceedings are submitted for indexation by SCOPUS, Google Scholar, The DBLP Computer Science Bibliography, Semantic Scholar, Microsoft Academic, Engineering Index (EI) and Web of Science / Conference Proceedings Citation Index.

COVID-ex 2022 – Special Session at BIOSTEC, the 15th Int. Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies is dedicated to broadly understood issues of COVID-19 data analysis using all available scientific methods. There are no limits for the kind of data: numeric, textual, or mixed. The problems encompasses a wide spectrum of existing methods, and an innovative use of them, as well as new innovative approaches are welcome. “COVID-ex” session is an opportunity to identify new research directions and presentation of original research results. It is also an opportunity for exchanging and diffusing innovative and practical experience in this hot field.

Scope

Nature has created, through evolution, robust and sustainable solutions to myriad challenges. This has inspired researchers to engineer biomimetic interactive materials for industrial, medicinal and environmental applications. The focus of BENEFICIAL will be on designing principles and functional materials inspired by nature. The session will highlight engineering approaches (growth, characterization and properties), biocompatibility and functionality of designed materials. However, the scope of bioinspired materials goes beyond the extent of these domains. Therefore, the critical aim of BENEFICIAL is to establish an international, interdisciplinary network (forum) of scientists from fields such as materials science and engineering, physics, biology, chemistry and medicine to discuss current state-of-art and future directions of bioinspired materials.

Wearable HealthCare is part of the actual human daily life. Scope

The new European regulation (EU MDR 2017/745) will enter into force on May 26, 2021. This new regulation sets forth new, improved rules to strengthen clinical evidence, particularly for high-risk medical devices for which a clinical study is mandatory. Given the wide range of medical devices available on the market and their countless variations in design features, treatment goals and targeted patient groups, setting a single standard study protocol seems unfeasible.This special session will cover efforts to build clinical evidence in accordance with the new regulations. We accept submissions covering all phases of the development cycle of a new medical device, from preliminary study confirming proof of concept to post-market clinical follow-up (real-world data) as well as in silico trials, first survey clinical in humans, medico-economy or usability study.

Scope

Machine learning has transformed healthcare by improving disease prediction, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments. Using large but relatively structured datasets like electronic health records (EHRs), scans, and labs, they provide indispensable tools and decision support to healthcare providers and patients. Lately, with bigger, more complex and unstructured datasets available, healthcare apps and clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have started to leverage deep learning to refine these recommendations. Such systems not only have prediction but learning capabilities also. Consequently, they enable preventive and rehabilitative healthcare that is highly personalized and adaptive. This session seeks completed research on applications of deep learning and cognitive computing in preventive care, personalized treatments and adaptive CDSS aiming to better health outcomes, patient satisfaction and costs.

Scope

Technologies for remote monitoring and management of human health are becoming widespread in the health care system. Long-term continuous monitoring of the state of human health makes it possible to identify individual patterns of changes in the functional state of the body systems, the interaction of various organism systems, to clarify the adaptive mechanisms of the whole organism under the influence of various exogenous factors. To implement long-term remote monitoring and control of a person's state, it is necessary to develop and use non-invasive methods and means of biomedical signals and data acquisition, methods for extracting useful information reflecting changes in organism systems, the formation of a complex of diagnostically significant indicators and an integral assessment of the state of the body. Among the methods of managing the state of a person, the methods of neurostimulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which will expand the possibilities of medical rehabilitation in remote control systems, are of the greatest interest. These issues will be discussed at a Special Session on Remote Management and Health Monitoring – RMHM.

Scope

Smart living environments can help remotely monitored vulnerable older adults, with the aim to prevent or stop the worsening of their health condition and associated incidental adverse events that negatively impact quality of life and increase health and social costs. This special session will focus on non-intrusive ambient systems, including sensors and artificial intelligence developments, but also the usability and user-centered design of such systems. Ethical and societal aspects related to these systems will also be discussed.

Administrative healthcare data provide large and panoramic views of national populations, which can be harnessed to provide evidence-based clinical assessment towards diagnosis, monitoring, and phenotyping. These come from a variety of sources, including primary and secondary care encounters, prescribing records, and disease registries.  This special session will cover new developments towards mining administrative healthcare data, including methodology studies, impact assessments, and reviews of ethical considerations.

Scope

One of the main problems dealt with by bioinformatics is to analyze the expression levels of various genes at once to discover his function, mainly using clustering techniques, which aim to group genes of similar expression tendencies together. The big problem in these researches is the huge amount of data that needs to be processed simultaneously, which require the development of new techniques and algorithms, principally on machine learning advances. This special session aims to show recent advances in machine learning applied to bioinformatic problems, presenting new techniques of processing, automated analysis and pattern classification. It also intends to be a forum for sharing experiences between specialists, researchers and beginners in the area, presenting and discussing relevant ideas.
